Partnerships

Partnerships
In order to commercialize the products arising from genetic resources, INDIGENA seeks to partner with a range of industries, according to the uses found for those resources.

The materials that we offer mostly fall into one of three categories:

  1.   Research Leads
These are usually based on traditional knowledge in the country of origin.  In addition, there may be some scientific studies on the species, reported in the literature. On some occasions, there would be sufficient information to develop a product in industries where patenting is not critical. In other instances, there would be scope for further research which, if successful, could be patentable.

  2. Collaborations with universities or research institutes in the country of origi n
This category arises because the  grant of an access permit in many countries requires some participation by local researchers. Such an arrangement provides an excellent way of gaining exclusive access to plant species not otherwise available.

  3. Development opportunities
In some cases, plant resources will have been researched and a patent application already filed.  Here, we would be looking for a company to review the opportunity to consider taking a  licence and developing a product.

We would usually be able to supply the relevant part of the plant, such as the leaves, fruit, or bark. Alternatively, we can arrange for the plant to be extracted in the country of origin, and the extract provided. In some cases, it would be possible to have the key constituents of the species isolated and the chemical structure identified, so that a research sample of the compound(s) could be supplied.

We seek to provide an exclusive position. The licensing of patents is well established. We now apply the same principle to licensing other rights: the use of  genetic resources and the use of traditional knowledge.
FEES AND PAYMENTS
  • INDIGENA charges a modest initial fee for gaining access to a research sample.
  • There may be an additional cost if  extraction or isolation is carried out in the source country.
  • For any commercial product that is developed based on the genetic resources or traditional knowledge, a share of the benefit, usually in terms of a royalty, is due to be paid to the country of origin. INDIGENA merely charges a percentage of that royalty payment.

With so many unexplored plant species available to investigate, it would be useful to learn of your subject matter preferences, so that we could seek to identify some relevant possibilities for your review. Do contact us to start a dialogue.
Together we can release the value of biodiversity
